In 2008, 11 climbers were killed on the Himalayan mountain K2 after an avalanche swept away their ropes. Cecilie Skog and her husband Rolf Bae were both accomplished mountaineers. She was the first woman to stand on both poles and the tallest peaks in every continent! They had met on Mount Elbrus in Russia in 2003, and married in 2007. On August 1 Cecilie reached the summit, but Rolf and 10 other climbers turned back, tired and perhaps suffering from altitude sickness. Rolf ventured out under a huge ice cliff and was swept into the void as the ice collapsed. Cecile now had to make it down, knowing her husband was no longer alive. The whole way down to a safe camp, she heared Rolf talking to her, guiding her into safety. This is my tribute to Cecilie Skog. [link]
